Car hire in Gozo
We hand the car over at the Mġarr ferry terminal, on Gozo. Walk off the boat, and the car is waiting — no car ferry fare, no queue at Ċirkewwa.
The ferry fare is for the car, not for you
Taking a hire car across costs €15.70 for the car and driver, and you pay it on the way back. Crossing on foot costs €4.65. If Gozo is the whole trip, hiring here is the cheaper and simpler way round.
- No car ferry fare. You cross as a foot passenger and pick the car up on the other side.
- No boarding queue. Foot passengers walk on; cars queue at Ċirkewwa, and in August that queue can mean waiting for the next sailing.
- You are already in Gozo when you start driving. Rather than an hour up the length of Malta before you even reach the boat.
Staying on Malta and only visiting Gozo for a day? Then bring the car across instead — that is allowed, and your cover comes with you. Here is how the crossing works.
Mġarr ferry terminal
At the terminal
We meet you at the Mġarr ferry terminal on Gozo, where the Ċirkewwa boat arrives. Tell us your sailing when you book and we are there for it.
Every day, 08:00 to 02:00
Including Sundays and public holidays. Late sailings are covered — you do not need to plan the trip around an office that shuts at six.
Twenty-five minutes across
The Ċirkewwa–Mġarr crossing takes about 25 minutes. There is no reservation system: boarding is first come, first served.
Cover applies on Gozo
The same cover, the same roadside assistance. Gozo is not carved out of your protection, and it is not a separate rental.
Return where you like
Bring it back to Mġarr, or drive it onto the ferry and leave it with us in Malta. Tell us which when you book so it is on the agreement.
The same price list
Gozo is not a surcharge. Rates are the same as Malta, from €22 a day, with the deposit shown before you confirm.
What suits Gozo
Gozo is smaller than Malta and quieter, but the lanes through Xagħra, Għarb and Nadur are narrower than anything you will meet on the main island, and the climbs out of the bays are steep.
- Two or three people: a small car is the right answer — an Aygo or a Fiat 500 from €22 a day. Easy to place on a village street, easy to turn.
- A family with cases: a C3 Aircross or a 308 at €31 to €38 a day gives you the boot without the width.
- Ramla, Dwejra and the coast roads: any of the fleet will manage them. Nothing on Gozo needs four-wheel drive.
- Groups: the nine-seat Traveller and Tourneo both cross on the ferry, but they are wide for the villages — see what nine seats actually mean before you book one for Gozo.
The full fleet and prices are the same wherever you collect.
Booking a Gozo collection
Choose Gozo — Mġarr ferry terminal as your pick-up office when you check availability. The rest is the same as any other booking: nothing is charged online, and a refundable deposit is pre-authorised at hand-over.
Hiring on Gozo
Can I collect on Gozo and return in Malta?
Yes. Tell us when you book so it is noted on the agreement. You drive onto the ferry and leave the car with us on the Malta side — the crossing fare is yours, and it is collected at Mġarr before you sail.
Is the price higher for a Gozo pick-up?
No. The daily rate and the deposit are the same as they are at the airport or at our Ħal Qormi base.
What time can I collect?
Any time between 08:00 and 02:00, every day of the year. Give us your sailing time and we will be at the terminal for it.
Do I need to book the ferry?
No, and you cannot — Gozo Channel does not run a reservation system. Boarding is first come, first served, and the boats run through the night in both directions.
Is my cover valid on Gozo?
Yes. Your cover and roadside assistance stay in force on Gozo exactly as they do on Malta, and on the crossing between them. Some companies exclude Gozo from breakdown recovery; we do not.
Can I take the car to Comino?
No — there is no car ferry to Comino and no road on it. Park at Ċirkewwa or Mġarr and take the passenger boat across.
Collect on Gozo.
Pick your dates, choose Gozo — Mġarr ferry terminal as the office, and we will meet the boat.
